What is house edge?

House edge is the casino's long-term mathematical advantage. If a blackjack game has a 0.5% house edge under perfect basic strategy, that does not mean you lose exactly 0.5% every session. It means the game is expected to favor the house over a very large number of hands.

The important point is that your decisions matter. Poor play can raise the effective house edge quickly, while basic strategy keeps it much lower.

Rules that affect blackjack odds

Rule Why it matters
Blackjack pays 3:2 Better for players than 6:5. This is one of the most important rules to check.
Dealer hits soft 17 Usually worse for players than dealer standing on soft 17.
Double after split Usually helps players because split hands can still become strong double opportunities.
Surrender allowed Can help players escape some very weak hands if used correctly.
More decks Can slightly affect odds and makes card counting harder.

3:2 vs 6:5 blackjack

A 3:2 blackjack payout means a $10 bet wins $15 profit on a natural blackjack. A 6:5 payout means the same $10 bet wins only $12 profit. That difference looks small on one hand, but it is large over time. When learning or choosing a real-money table, 3:2 is generally much better for players.

What are the odds of winning a hand?

Exact odds depend on rules, decks, strategy, and whether pushes are counted separately. In general, blackjack includes wins, losses, and pushes. A player can win fewer than half of all hands and still have a reasonable game because blackjack payouts, doubles, splits, and pushes affect the final result.

That is why "win rate" alone is not the full story. Expected value is shaped by how much is won or lost in each situation.

Side bets usually have higher house edge

Side bets like 21+3 and Perfect Pairs can be entertaining, but they often carry a higher house edge than the main blackjack game. Treat them as optional entertainment, not as a strategy upgrade.

Best odds habit: Learn basic strategy, prefer 3:2 blackjack, avoid insurance as a beginner, and be cautious with side bets.
