What are blackjack side bets?

A side bet is a separate wager placed in addition to the main blackjack hand. It usually pays based on a special card pattern, not simply whether you beat the dealer. Side bets can be fun, but they often have a higher house edge than the main game.

Common side bets

Side bet What it usually checks
21+3 Your first two cards plus the dealer upcard make a poker-style hand such as flush, straight, or three of a kind.
Perfect Pairs Your first two cards form a pair, with better payouts for same color or same suit pairs.
Insurance A side bet that the dealer has blackjack when showing an Ace.
Lucky Ladies A side bet based on a player total of 20, often with special Queen combinations.

Free Bet Blackjack

Free Bet Blackjack is a popular variant where the house covers certain double down and split bets with free bet chips. In exchange, the game usually includes a dealer 22 push rule: if the dealer busts with 22, many player hands push instead of winning. That rule changes strategy and increases volatility.

You can try the site's Free Bet Blackjack game to see how the variant feels before studying deeper strategy.

Other blackjack variants

Spanish 21 removes the 10 cards from the deck and adds special bonus rules. Blackjack Switch lets players switch second cards between two hands, but usually changes blackjack payouts and dealer push rules. Pontoon is a British-style 21 game with different terminology and rule details.

Each variant needs its own strategy. Do not assume regular blackjack basic strategy transfers perfectly.

Strategy note: Learn the main blackjack game first. Add side bets and variants only after you understand how the base game pays.

Should beginners play side bets?

Beginners are usually better off focusing on the main hand. Side bets can distract from the decisions that matter most: hit, stand, split, double, and insurance. If you play side bets for entertainment, keep them small and separate from your main strategy practice.
